For those not keen on taking painkilling drugs, organic pain relief could be a great alternative. You’ve probably heard about the most common natural remedies for pain, like cannabidiol, curcumin/turmeric, and kratom. Maybe you’ve even tried them yourself! If you’re wanting to expand your repertoire or experience a different kind of therapeutic action, consider these lesser-known solutions for organic pain relief.
Cinnamon for Menstrual Pain
As a culinary spice, cinnamon has one of those versatile flavors that seems to go with anything. However, studies show that this common spice could also function as a source of organic pain relief for menstrual pain or ‘primary dysmenorrhea.’
In a study published in 2015, the effects of cinnamon on menstrual pain were compared to ibuprofen and placebo. In this trial, 114 female Iranian college students with primary dysmenorrhea were given 420mg of cinnamon, 400mg of ibuprofen, or a corn starch capsule placebo in a 24-hour period. Their pain levels were then measured during the first 72 hours of their menstrual cycle.
And the Winner Is…
What the researchers found was that ibuprofen and cinnamon both reduced the women’s menstrual pain, although cinnamon took a little longer to work. However, considering that cinnamon comes without the dangerous risks and side effects of ibuprofen, natural remedies for pain like cinnamon could provide the ideal solution for many women.
Topical Black Seed Oil for Osteoarthritis
According to research, osteoarthritis is the most common disorder of the joints, affecting 10% of males and 13% of females over the age of 60 in the United States. Fortunately, organic pain relief in the form of black seed oil (from Nigella sativa) has been shown to help.
In a 2016 crossover trial, 40 elderly patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were given either an 8-hourly application of black seed oil to the knee or a 325mg tablet of acetaminophen (paracetamol) once per day for three weeks. After a one-week wash-out period, the treatments were swapped over and the same pain measurements were taken. Not only was black seed oil effective for pain reduction without any side effects, but it was also more effective than the tablet of acetaminophen!
